PURPOSE

The purpose of this conference is to educate, inspire, connect, and celebrate all whose lives have been touched by cancer or any life-altering illness.

• Cancer or any life-altering illness can be viewed as both devastating and rewarding.
• When viewing illness in the context of the whole person (body, mind, emotions, and spirit), its transformative  potential as an awakening for the soul and spirit is realized.
• Only then can we see it as an opportunity and utilize its gifts.

INSTRUCTOR / FACILITATOR
Debra Jarvis, “the irreverent reverend with something to say,” is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. She is a breast cancer survivor and author of It’s Not About the Hair: And Other Certainties of Life & Cancer (Sasquatch, 2007) which was a finalist for the 2009 Washington State Book Awards.

She has worked as a hospice spiritual counselor and currently serves as chaplain for the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. She is a commentator for NPR & speaks at conferences and workshops on cancer, death and dying, medical staff care, spirituality and the importance of quality chocolate. www.debrajarvis.com

THE WORKSHOP
One of the most astounding things about the cancer experience is discovering that only a small part of it is about medicine. Most of it is about feelings and faith, and losing and finding your identity, and discovering strength and flexibility you never knew you had. It’s also about looking at life and staring death in the eye. It’s about realizing that the most valuable things in life are not things at all, but relationships. It’s about laughing in the face of uncertainty and having the courage to turn down the broccoli and ask for more chocolate.

The cancer experience brings up our deepest beliefs and often we’re not sure exactly what we believe. Exploring questions about life’s meaning, spirituality, death and grief helps us clarify our beliefs and find meaning in our experience.

This workshop will provide a safe forum for discussion and exploration of:
• life’s meaning
• spirituality
• death and grief
• integration of our beliefs

Using a combination of brief lectures, small group sharing, visual journaling, music, guided imagery, and gentle movement, we will enter into discussions in a spirit of inquiry, curiosity, discovery, and collaboration.

Over the course of two days Debra will open a space in which it is safe to unwind, explore, laugh and share. Aspects of childhood beliefs, patterned behavior and cultural norms are a few of the guideposts for our sharing. Dark chocolate will be provided.

Participants can expect to:
• gain new perspectives
• increase their comfort level when discussing these issues
• gain a deeper understanding of their beliefs
• find new meaning in their experience

This workshop is for all levels: cancer patients, families and friends, medical staff, clergy, counselors, social workers, or anyone wanting to find meaning in life’s challenges.

Saturday lunch will be networking time and we encourage everyone to participate in this important activity. You can order lunch or bring your own lunch. Our cost for lunch is $20. Housing at University of Virginia

Housing is available at University Housing near Darden.  The suite style rooms include a living room area and kitchen, but do not include pots, pans, or utensils.  Free parking is available in front of the rooms on Saturday and Sunday.

The nightly rates of $52.50 single occupancy and $38 double occupancy include basic dormitory sheets for a twin bed, a pillow case, one towel, one wash cloth, one bath mat.  Please bring blankets with you! The bathrooms are shared and do not include any toiletries or amenities that you may find in a hotel.

Jeanne Achterberg, PhD, is a scientist who has received international recognition for her pioneering research in medicine and psychology. She is currently a Professor of Psychology at Saybrook Institute, San Francisco. She has authored over 100 papers and five books, including Imagery in Healing, Woman as Healer, and Rituals of Healing, a primer on the use of creative therapies for health and medicine. Lightning at the Gate is the story of her personal healing journey. In April of 2001, she was featured in TIME magazine as one of the six innovators of alternative and complementary medicine for the coming century. She is currently senior editor for the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. Her most recent research was on the effect of distant healing and prayer on brain function. In spring of 2008, Sounds True, Inc. published her CD series entitled Intentional Healing.

Michael Lerner, PhD, is president and founder of Commonweal, a health, environmental and educational center in Bolinas, California, and of Smith Farm Center for Healing and the Arts in Washington, D.C. He is co-founder with Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D. of the Commonweal Cancer Help Program, a week-long retreat for people with cancer featured by Bill Moyers in his award winning PBS series “Healing and the Mind.” Smith Farm Center offers a four-day Cancer Help Program. Sista Monica Parker is a blues and gospel singer, a songwriter, record producer, speaker, and musical minister reaching out to nursing homes, cancer survivors, and spiritual communities. Sista Monica is a Soul Survivor! She captivates with her remarkable story and songs of surviving a rare life threatening cancer, Synovial Sarcoma, in 2003. There is wide agreement that one of the most important things we can do to support and promote our own health is to give our bodies the nutrients it needs. There are many theories of nutrition out there, and we need to know what science has discovered that will aid in recovery and prevent recurrence. Jeanne Wallace is the expert on evidence-based nutritional and botanical support for wellness.

We also need to know how to translate that science into the meals that come out of our kitchens. Rebecca Katz is re-defining the concept of health-supportive cuisine in a way that’s proving deliciously irresistible to patients and professionals alike. Using equal parts warm kitchen-table wisdom and credible scientific knowledge, Rebecca has helped thousands of people improve their health as they battle chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and obesity. She will provide the practical help with healthy eating that you have asked for.

Instructors 

Jeanne Wallace, PhD, CNC is an authority in integrative cancer care, educating cancer patients and their health-care providers about evidence-based dietary, nutritional and botanical support to complement conventional oncology care. After earning her PhD in Nutrition in 1998, Dr. Wallace pioneered a multi-modal approach using nutrition to target multiple aspects of cancer physiopathology. She specializes in primary malignant brain tumors and also has extensive experience working with other cancers. She is the author of numerous articles, has lectured widely on cancer and nutrition, and serves as a consultant to many oncologists and cancer centers across the U.S. and abroad.
