Last month I attended a three-day conference in Stamford, CT, called “Advanced Strategies in Cancer Care.” This was a Continuing Medical Education conference given for doctors by doctors. I had two purposes for going: (1) discover new ways of addressing my diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer; (2) find new speakers for our Cancer as a Turning Point conference. I accomplished both. I’m just going to write about the first one this week.

You might remember that I was told I wasn’t a candidate for a thermal ablation because of the location of the tumor in my lung. I was told that the collateral damage to other organs could be catastrophic. They recommended major surgery to “scoop out” the tumor.

One of the speakers at the conference in Stamford spoke about ablation technology and success he has had using it in Alabama for the past ten years. During a break I shared with him what I had been told and where my tumor is. He said, in his experience, there was no danger of any collateral damage to other organs. He believed he could do the procedure easily and successfully on my tumor. He questioned whether he could get insurance to pay for it.

Other relevant pieces of information I gleaned from other speakers at the conference are: (1) Surgery stimulates inflammation in the body, which promotes the growth of cancer; (2) Improved diet, supplements, reduced stress, deepening one’s spiritual life, and other “treatments” I am employing are more effective when the tumor load is removed.

Given this information, all learned in three days, I am highly motivated to eliminate my tumor without having surgery.

When I got back home, I made an appointment with a different Interventional Radiologist in a different healthcare system. I saw him last week and he agrees with everything I learned at the conference, and agrees that he can ablate my tumor. It’s his specialty. He also said my insurance will cover it. He recommends cryoablation (freezing it instead of burning it) because it is a less painful procedure and equally effective. I had also learned about this procedure at the conference and it makes sense to me.

He wants another CT scan before doing it, so I suggested we wait till July when I already have a scan scheduled for my 6 month re-test. So if the tumor is still there in July, it needs to “get its affairs in order” because it will soon be ablated. Hurray!

I think one “take-home” lesson from this journey is a reinforcement of the recommendation to follow one’s intuition regarding treatment, and not do what a doctor recommends if it doesn’t feel right.

 var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];

 js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1";

Healing Journeys is committed to diversity and pledges to include, welcome, and support all individuals of any race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, age, socioeconomic background, religion, sexual orientation, and disability.

Purpose

The purpose of this program is to educate, inspire, connect, and celebrate all whose lives have been touched by cancer or any life-altering condition.

Cancer, or any life-altering illness, can be viewed as both a curse and a blessing. If viewed simply as a disease of the body, it is experienced only as a curse. When we view illness in the context of the whole person (body, mind, emotions, and spirit), we see its transformative potential as an awakening for the soul and spirit. Only then can we see it as a blessing and utilize its gifts.

“Thanks for creating this space where I can begin to come to terms with a cancer diagnosis. Thank you for the love . . .”

Who Should Attend

Women and men touched by cancer or any life-altering condition.

Caregivers, family members, or friends of someone touched by cancer or other illness

Physicians, Nurses, Social Workers, and other Healthcare Providers

Conference Objectives

Differentiate between curing the body and healing the person

Explore illness as an awakening with transformative potential

Rediscover the healing capacity of the human spirit

Facilitate healing from within as an essential component of total health

Experience the physical and emotional benefits of group support

Discover the impact of psycho-social and spiritual beliefs on the immune system

Facilitate networking among people and organizations with common goals and concerns

Last Saturday 213 people attended The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen workshop in Los Gatos. This was the sixth time I have attended this workshop and every time I get inspired and come home with a few new ideas to create a healthy body. There is too much information for me to absorb it all in one sitting.

A few practical tips I learned this time:

To get the most benefit nutritionally from garlic, it needs to breathe before putting it in the frying pan. Mash it and leave it alone for ten minutes before adding it to the onions and the olive oil (or coconut oil) in the frying pan.

Lemon (zest or juice) added to anything (especially kale) helps the nutrients get absorbed.

When taking Vitamin D, it needs fat to help it get absorbed. Vitamin D is fat soluble. If you take it with a meal that doesn’t include fat, it doesn’t get absorbed.

The nut highest in anti-oxidants is the pistachio. This is great news since it is one of my favorites.

Of course there was so much more. These are just hints I missed the first five times I took the workshop, or they were new information.

We videotaped the workshop with two HD cameras and will have DVDs available soon. I’ll let you know when they’re ready. I know I missed a few key points and am looking forward to watching it.

 js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1";

Last week I focused on #4 in my “treatment” plan – feeling love/joy/happiness. After attending a three-day conference in Stamford, CT, I spent a few days in New York City with my friend, Carol (Past-President of Healing Journeys’ Board of Directors). The energy in the City was so intense that it was easy to be in the present and not think about all the work waiting to be done at home.

Much of what we did in New York was just ADL (Activities of Daily Living – a phrase I learned from Carol, who is a nurse). We walked a lot, slept, and ate, but we were doing these Activities of Daily Living in NYC. This context made all the difference in the world. I felt free and I felt happy.

This picture is us in Strawberry Fields in Central Park. That smile on my face is happiness and joy in the moment. It was a beautiful day and everyone we met was friendly. When we were hungry, it seemed easy to find a restaurant that served organic food and pastured meats and that was over-the-top delicious.

The Book of Mormon is the hottest show on Broadway right now. It was sold out, so we stood in the Cancellation line for almost two hours – and we got 5th row center seats. The promises friends had made that it would make me laugh out loud were all true. It was outrageously funny.

After three days of happiness and joy, I’m asking why I don’t give myself this gift more often. Why do I only allow myself a few play-days tacked onto a trip whose main purpose was attending a cancer conference? Even my oncologist suggested that I make some travel plans that weren’t related to cancer.

Dear Friends,

We have said that our conference addresses the whole person — body, mind, and spirit. I recently read in an article by Thomas Moore that “The classical trinity has always been “body-soul-spirit.” He said, “Even ‘enlightened’ healthcare workers speak easily of “mind-body-spirit” medicine, not even noticing that the soul is missing.”

That ‘enlightened’ healthcare worker could be me. I feel like I have often ignored my soul, giving all my attention to body, mind, and spirit.

For the sake of this conversation, “Spirit” is the non-material world, the energy through which we all connect, and through which we connect to the Divine, however we conceive of it. “Soul” is the thing that makes me unique. It’s my personal life force. It’s what makes me feel alive. Thomas Moore says, “a soulful life and fun go together.”

When I was first diagnosed with cancer in 1989, I had just spent the previous two years putting all of my energy and time into developing a new business — a retail furniture store. I hadn’t given any thought or attention to my soul. I didn’t have much music, beauty, laughter, good food, or time with friends in my life. I thought being productive and creating the business was more important than having fun.

I think this was part of why I first developed cancer and I’ve been making an effort to change it ever since. It’s been a long and continuing process. It’s exciting for me to re-discover the work of Thomas Moore because it gives me a framework in which to explore and expand how to nourish my soul.

To quote Thomas Moore again, “I’ve encountered people who, in dealing with their problems, just don’t have enough space in them. Maybe they haven’t allowed life to affect them much. Life experiences stretch you, when you let them have their impact. Maybe they haven’t allowed emotions that frighten them, like anger, sadness, or desire. Let some of those in, and your soul will get bigger, fast. Maybe they haven’t reflected much on their experience. An unconscious soul is a small one.” This is from the article Care of the Soul: Mega-Soul.

So part of my on-going “treatment” is to nourish my soul, and also to fully feel my emotions, even if they frighten me. Thomas Moore’s article above ends with, “However simple your life, however ordinary and retiring, you can have a mega-soul, a vast source of vitality, and the capacity for pain and failure as well. You can be noble in your simplicity and deep and wide in your ability to contain life.” This sounds as important in addressing cancer as eating an anti-cancer diet.

I think the Cancer as a Turning Point conferences have always been a way for me to receive what I needed in my own healing journey. It seems like other people often have the same needs. To continue that practice, I’m excited to announce that Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul will be one of our speakers at our free conference in Spartanburg, SC on June 23rd. You can get more information and register here.

Here are just a few more of the ways I’ve changed my diet in the past year. I avoid foods with a high glycemic load. That means not just avoiding sugar, which I’ve done for years, but also avoiding some carbohydrates, like flour, rice, pasta, potatoes, and corn. Some other foods with high glycemic loads are cereal (including oatmeal), fruit juice, dried fruits, crackers, muffins, cookies, soda pop, and fat-free foods.

Although whole wheat flour has a lower glycemic load than white flour, it’s still pretty high. If you want to make something with flour, a better choice is almond flour or coconut flour, both of which have no glycemic load. They are low in carbs and high in protein.

Sometimes, when I really want a piece of toast, I use Ezekiel bread, from Food for Life. I look for a ratio of fiber to carbs of at least 1 gram of fiber for every 10 grams of carbs. The only bread I have found that meets those requirements and has 0 sugar content is Ezekiel bread.

If I avoided all sugars, I wouldn’t be eating any fruit. But there are nutrients in fruit that my body needs. Jeanne Wallace (in the Cancer-Fighting Kitchen workshop) said that it’s not just eating sugar that feeds cancer, but it’s spiking my blood sugar that allows sugar to feed cancer. So whenever I eat fruit, I eat it with protein that balances my blood sugar. I eat an apple with a piece of cheese or a few almonds. Or banana (green has less sugar than ripe) with almond butter.

One of my comfort foods is mashed potatoes (glycemic load of 16) and I have discovered that I love mashed cauliflower (glycemic load of 4) as much as mashed potatoes. I steam or roast the cauliflower for about 15 minutes and then blend it in my Vitamix blender, adding liquid till it is the consistency I want. If I have pastured butter and raw cream, I use that for the liquid. I’ve also done it with organic chicken broth and it was almost as good.

I have barely scratched the surface of what I learned in the Cancer-Fighting Kitchen workshop. If you aren’t able to attend one of the workshops, I highly recommend getting the DVDs of the workshop when they become available later this year, so you have access to the empowering information.
