Cancer as a Turning Point, From Surviving to ThrivingTM

An integrative program connecting community, healthcare and healing

Case Study: Harrison Medical Center

Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton, Washington, has evolved from a small community hospital to a busy regional medical center and serves three counties. Their mission is to make a positive difference in people’s lives through exceptional medical care. The people they serve in the community know they don’t have to travel into Seattle to get the quality care they need.

In 2007, Harrison Medical Center contracted with Healing Journeys to produce a Cancer as a Turning Point, From Surviving to ThrivingTM conference. The one-day program that Harrison sponsored was a successful and very powerful event that spoke to every element of surviving cancer. The multi-faceted agenda included an award-winning gospel singer, inspirational humorist, oncology chaplain, medical doctor and author, as well as a local panel of an oncologist, naturopathic physician, and psychotherapist. Participants were very responsive to this integrative program. Based on the results, over 83% of the participants strongly agreed that group support, stories, laughter and music can contribute to their healing process.

Patti Hart, Director of Marketing and Communications for Harrison Medical Center, commented on the program, “We received amazing feedback on the conference and were delighted to offer this gift to our patients and community. This was a successful event for our Center and we plan to do another one in 2009.”
